The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning

Leo Says: I'm not gunna bother with a synopsis cuz we all know this film is about bloody death. People are always saying that horror films are not as good these days as they used to be. But then along came The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and hey lookie we have a winner try to give a reason not to watch this other than maybe that they push the envelope a little. This is my idea of horror. 10/10 I do have one miner complaint, I would have liked to have seen a massacre, you know were they kill a hundred people or so with a chainsaw.

Kate Says: Ditto. I was actually quite thrilled with this movie; I liked it even better than the original. I saw it in the theater and several people actually walked out because it was too intensely gory. Another aspect that makes this a rare horrorfilm: I actually felt bad for the characters by the end and was hoping they would survive. I highly reccomend.

Tom yum goong (Protector)

Kate Says: Tony Jaa is freaking amazing. This movie actually has a good plot and keeps you interested throughout; as a general rule I steer clear of martial arts flicks, but I thouroughly enjoyed "the Protector." To be repetitive: Tony Jaa is amazing and intense. He has awesome skills, and the thing that amazes me the most is the fact that he can perform his stunts with the restraint so that he doesn't actually hurt/kill the other actors, yet the effect is not compromised. Martial arts fan or not, I reccomend this film.

Jan 09 2007 Releases

Runtime: 87 min Country: UK / USA Language: English / Spanish
Plot Outline: Professional assassin Chev Chelios (Statham) learns his rival (Cantillo) has injected him with a poison that will kill him if his heart rate drops. (more) (view trailer)
CAST: Jason Statham, Amy Smart, Efren Ramirez, Dwight Yoakam
Leo Says: Super fast paced, very entertaining I have no complaints except that they don't make enough movies like this. Unfortunately for the action film lover, one usually has to watch lousy b-style flicks in order to see some old school action and while some of these satisfy its just not the same. Simply put CRANK rule.

The Illusionist

Rated PG-13 for some sexuality and violence. Runtime: 110 min
Country: Czech Republic / USA Language: English
Plot Outline: In turn-of-the-century Vienna, a magician (Norton) uses his abilities to secure the love of a woman far above his social standing. (more) (view trailer)
CAST: Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti, Jessica Biel, Rufus Sewell
Leos Says: While this was in theaters I had no interest and when it came out I was only mildly curious, but now having watched it, I am impressed. The magic was fancy, the acting superb all around and the directing left little to be desired.

Directed by: Mike Judge (Office Space)
Plot Outline: Private Joe Bowers, the definition of "average American", is selected by the Pentagon to be the guinea pig for a top-secret hibernation program. Forgotten, he awakes 500 years in the future. He discovers a society so incredibly dumped-down that he's easily the most intelligent person alive. (more) (view trailer)
Leo Says: This film was a fair bit funnier then I had anticipated, though not as intelligent. Lots of easy fun laughs with an interesting story idea. Solid acting, directing and writing.

The Night Listener

Cast: Robin Williams, Toni Collette, Joe Morton, Bobby Cannavale, Rory Culkin, Sandra Oh
Plot Outline: In the midst of his crumbling relationship, a radio show host begins speaking to his biggest fan, a young boy, via the telephone. But when questions about the boy's identity come up, the host's life is thrown into chaos. (view trailer)
Leo Says: This was the big surprise of the week for me I did not expect to even like this movie and I have to say I loved it. Toni Collette is an actress I expect a lot out of and her role here was amazingly well played. What really made this movie though were the amazing writers, how people put stories like this together I will never understand.

Luc Besson is one of two writers.
Plot Outline: In turn-of-the-century Mexico, two very different women become a bank-robbing duo in an effort to combat a ruthless enforcer terrorizing their town. (view trailer)
Cast: Penélope Cruz, Salma Hayek, Steve Zahn, Dwight Yoakam
Leo Says: Not gunna win anyacademyy awards, but it'lltitillatee, entertain and mostlikelyy make you laugh.

Plot Outline: As Magdalena's 15th birthday approaches, her simple, blissful life is complicated by the discovery that she's pregnant. Kicked out of her house, she finds a new family with her great-granduncle and gay cousin. (more) (view trailer)
